GUEST ARTIST

JeanCherie  Raku Sculpture Artist

I was a horse crazy girl. I drew horses before I rode them.

I learned to sculpt and made my living building critters like H.R. Puff ‘n Stuff for Sid and Marty Krofft, the Giraffe walk-around costumes for Toys R Us, a hippopotamus walk-around costume for The New Zoo Revue, the TV show Dinosaurs, and Pinocchio’s Whale float for Uncle Walt, to name just a few.

I sculpted for motion pictures (The Flintstones, What Women Want, Hocus Pocus), TV commercials, theme park animatronics, and built marionettes. But no horses !

As a Fine Art sculptor I enjoy working in many additive and subtractive media including, stone, bronze, paper, and, I love sculpting in ceramic clay. It is spontaneous, immediate, responsive, and satisfying to my Soul.

I am intrigued with Raku firing, a traditional Japanese method of firing ceremonial tea bowls which has been enthusiastically embraced by sculptors and ceramists.

In 2014, I sculpted my first Raku Rocking Horse!

The race was on. One became a series. Each piece articulates the feelings I treasured about horses as a child……. the freedom, power, and speed I imagined galloping across the open prairie………I was enchanted with the glamour of the beautiful senoritas with their voluminous skirts melding them to elegant prancing ponies at the Rose Parade every New Years Morning!

This equine herd will grow as the inspiration strikes me!
