Artist’s Statement

I have always loved working with my hands. As I explored my artistic interests, clay became my favorite medium. Clay has a beautiful tactile quality that is resilient and forgiving, offering me a myriad of possibilities both creatively and technically.

I am interested in creating functional work that moves into the realm of sculpture. I like to play with the idea of dichotomies: textured vs. smooth, organic vs. geometric, dark vs. light, hard vs. soft.  I feel that we as humans are filled with dichotomies of our own. I see my vessels as reflections of myself and my interest in exploring my own nature.

I work with clay slabs to create clean, crisp forms. I enjoy creating forms that juxtapose curves with hard edges. Color and texture are used to add interest and/or accentuate aspects of the work; changing colors at a sharp edge being one example of this. Currently, I am experimenting with printmaking processes on clay to add depth and interest to my work.  I am inspired by nature and architecture, thus the structure of my pieces may feel architectural and the textures and colors may be inspired directly with my contact with nature.
