GUEST ARTIST

Roy Tatman

My interest in art began in high school starting with jewelry fabrication to building sculpture along the San Francisco Bay with recycled materials. This lead to taking studio classes at the San Francisco Art Institute while still in high school. When I graduated I continued to study art at the College of Arts and Crafts and Laney College in Oakland.

Later, I focused my interests to become a Landscape Architect. I found my creative energy and 3-dimensional view of the world to be very useful in my profession, though with different materials and at a different scale. Currently, I’m pursuing my sculptural aspirations through welded steel and wooden constructions, that evoke both whimsy and abstraction. I feel my work continues to imply a sense of scale and monumentality.

My work investigates balance through universal shapes that are easy to absorb, like the circle and rectangle. I’m always reaching for ways to balance the unexpected between empty and full, sometimes noticing that empty shapes can act like both a frame and support. I use the circle like an off kilter portal. In the environment, the circle is like a frame to see the changing world through. Nature peeks through like a constantly painting of time.
