GUEST ARTIST
Daniel Klapprott Ceramics Artist
I was raised in Phoenix Arizona but have lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for more than thirty years. I have a degree in chemistry and spent many years formulating and developing new consumer products. I started working with clay in 1999 and quickly fell in love with the medium and the joy of creating with my hands. After countless hours in the studio and many workshops and college courses, it has become a major pursuit and passion.
I approach pottery with the scientist’s eye for detail and the artist’s desire for the unique and unusual. I strive for the perfect execution in form and symmetry but I value the traces of me left behind in the throwing lines, finger and tool marks, and imperfections of the altering process. While my functional ware is generally tightly controlled, high-fired porcelain, what I truly enjoy are alternate methods of firing – like salt, raku and especially pit-firing techniques – because they allow the fire itself to play a role in the ultimate aesthetic. These methods rely on natural materials and the fire instead of traditional glazes to produce flame painted pieces with unconstrained blooms and bursts of color. The unique rose, violet, plum, orange, gray and black swirls and patterns result from the nature of the primitive firing methods.
I am currently working with my wife, painter Pamela Fletcher, out of our studio in Lafayette, CA. I also enjoy traveling and am an avid photographer.
